This genealogy site started with the Shortland family based in Cork, Ireland. John Shortland, born in Great Berkhamsted Hertfordshire circa 1832, raised his family in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire (marrying 3 times like his father Francis before him). John's eldest son, Frank born in 1859, came to Cork with the British Army, married Cork girl Annie Mitchell, and their descendants continue today in Cork, Dublin, Coventry and beyond. We have expanded our research to cover our maternal ancestry as well - the Mehegans* and O'Briens, leading to the Fitzpatricks, Gearys and many other families.
(* Note that the Meh-e-gan and Meh-i-gan spellings are interchangable and came down to family preference, or followed the spelling used by the registrar on birth and marriage certificates. Both spellings are in use within our family, even differing between brothers).
All birth, marriage and death information (name, dates, location, parents' occupations, mother's maiden name) is public information readily available from the General Records Office (GRO) in Ireland and UK. If you are unhappy with and entry or do not want to be featured, email Nick.
